How Will I Feel After Treatment with Sleep Dentistry?

Sleep dentistry can be a revolutionary complement to treatment for those who deal with crippling dental anxiety or fear of the dentist. While some nervousness and hesitation prior to a dental appointment are normal, many patients will avoid going to the dentist for years due to all-consuming dental phobia or apprehensiveness following an unpleasant experience. Thanks to ADA-approved (American Dental Association) sedation dentistry techniques, men and women can now get the care they need in a more relaxed, comfortable, and enjoyable state.

That said, it’s important for patients planning to undergo sedation dentistry to know what to expect after their appointment. Our multispecialty dental team will fully inform you of how the effects of dental sedation may impact you. Generally speaking, after their treatment is complete, patients who receive nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation may feel:

  • Groggy
  • Drowsy
  • Unfocused
  • Relaxed
  • Slight nauseous or dizzy
  • Unable to remember the details of their treatment

The effects of nitrous oxide generally last for about 15 to 30 minutes after one’s mask is removed. Lightheadedness may linger, but should subside naturally. Men and women are typically able to drive themselves home afterward. For those who receive oral conscious sedation, it can take approximately eight hours or more to feel “back to normal.” Driving and operating heavy machinery are prohibited for oral conscious sedation patients. Rest assured that your DOCS-certified dentist will give you a good understanding of what to expect after sleep dentistry.

At Scripps Center for Dental Care, we strive to keep patients as well-informed about the details of their treatment plan as possible.
